Let's Talk: Night 1

August 31 at 10:13pm

I'm going to talk to you the way that I'm talking to myself internally. That means, there will be incomplete thoughts (aka incomplete sentences) [and a whole lot of jumping around]. It will also mean that this is actually the way that I talk. and think. There will also be a lot of pauses.

One of my goals for tonight was to finish an article by 10:30pm, my bedtime during the weekday. It's 10:15pm HST. This is one of those articles where your professor claims that she tried her best to limit to 2 (research) articles per week, and each one pertains roughly 25-40 pages long. And, we have to respond to them. So, I've come up with common phrases such as: "One thing that stood out to me was..." or "I'm curious to know more about..." and "I'd like to build on...."

Am I genuine with those responses? Sometimes, yes. Other times, no. Most of the time, I just need to get it done. However, I do enjoy some of the readings that showcase how theories can become empirical evidence (is this right to say?). For example, here's a quote from Wells (2007) that I really liked: (sorry, I meant that "stood out to me", genuinely):

"...question the existing norms, to explore alternatives, and to propose new ideas with a view to 'improve' received knowledge and practices in order to make them more appropriate and effective for the present and the foreseeable future...The task of education...is to provide opportunities and support for both of these aspects of development."

*Wells (2007) describes the functions of monologic and dialogic discourses.

To all the naysayers (me, 15 minutes prior to revisiting this quote) about keeping traditions and cultural practices alive and well, let this be a reminder that people change and evolve, so do societies...so let's go along with the transformation. Now I'm just making things up. The point is, while I'm all about preserving cultures, I'm also open to adding to it. Most importantly, to all the Gen Z folx out there that I've been mentally and quietly judging, I'll do my best to readjust my perspective because this quote inspired me to let go of "my ways."

We're in Week 2 of the academic school year, and my feelings have fluctuated quite a bit. That's another story for another night. I've got 6 minutes to read what I can before bedtime.

Good talk, friends.

Good night, wherever you are, or...good morning.

P.S. I also hope that I don't come back to this published post 30 minutes later to write that I've missed my bedtime because I'm a perfectionist and won't give up until I actually finish the reading. 21 out of 36 pages. Here we go...again.
